How Sustainable Tourism Saves the Planet
Hans Andersen once rightly said, “To travel is to live,” and could there be a better way to encapsulate the spirit of travel and the magic that entails an odyssey? Epoch after epoch, travel has retained its stature as one of the most crucial pillars of empowerment, enlightenment, and entertainment.
Even in today’s age, traveling has found an ever-expanding fan base, with individuals across the globe evermore eager to embrace adventure trips. This stands as a testament to the spirit of adventure and wonder that has passed on from our ancestors and which shall find relevance even in future generations.
However, the deteriorating state of our mighty and beautiful hills, oceans, lakes, rivers, glaciers, and verdant vistas—the landscapes on which our travel fantasies rest—signals a looming peril. Growing forest fires, appalling marine pollution, the alarming rate at which glaciers are melting, ever-expanding concrete jungles, and the perishing biodiversity are unfolding concurrently at a tragic pace.
We are no strangers to this reality, and it’s high time we adopt sustainable practices for our future travels. Sustainable tourism isn’t just a trend; it’s a necessity. Here are 10 actionable tips to ensure that our adventures support the planet and its people.
1. Choose Eco-Friendly Transportation
The aviation sector is a major contributor to global carbon emissions. Opt for low-impact modes of transportation such as buses, trains, and ferries whenever possible. It not just helps us travel sustainably but also helps individuals take a solid step towards environmental conservation.
Our Warrior force travelled from Dehradun to Indore via train with a whole lot of reusables and generated about 1 kg of plastic waste for a week-long trip.
2. Opt for Nearby Destinations
Closer destinations significantly lower our carbon emissions. By exploring local or regional attractions, we reduce the environmental toll of long-haul flights and contribute to preserving local communities.
3. Prioritize Local and Seasonal Foods
The packaged food industry generates a lot of waste, contributing significantly to environmental harm. By choosing local and seasonal foods, travelers can help reduce the pollution generated from transport and packaging of unseasonal, packaged food items and also support the local ecosystem.
We ensured all of our meals were consumed in reusables, from breakfast to dinners.
4. Travel Light
Pack only what is required so as to reduce the weight of extra luggage. Heavier loads in transportation require more fuel, directly increasing emissions. Traveling light is a small yet impactful step towards sustainable tourism and helps us take a step towards environmental conservation.
5. Stay in Eco-Friendly Accommodations
Choose accommodations that prioritize sustainability. Look for certifications like Green Key or EarthCheck that showcase lodgings which use renewable energy, conserve water and energy, and support the local community. Waste Warriors in collaboration with hotels in Kempty is realising the vision of “Eco stays” by promotion of reusables, minimization of disposables and proper waste segregation and management.
6. Minimize Plastic Use
Around 500 billion plastic bottles are used worldwide yearly. However, only 12% of these bottles are recycled. The foremost step towards sustainable tourism is to ditch single-use PET bottles. By carrying reusable bottles, utensils, and shopping bags we can help reduce pollution in destinations across the world.

7. Support Local Artisans and Businesses
Buy goods and crafts directly from local artisans rather than mass-produced items. This not only helps preserve traditional crafts but also fosters the economic growth of local communities.
8. Respect Cultural and Natural Heritage
Respect the customs, traditions, and ecosystems of the destination being visited. Avoid practices that harm wildlife or disrupt local cultures.

9. Participate in Conservation Activities
Engage in volunteer programs like beach cleanups, tree planting, or wildlife conservation projects. Contributing one’s time towards preservation efforts not only deepens one’s travel experience but also amplifies the impact of sustainable tourism. At Waste Warriors, we have a campaign named “Eco Daan”- a collaborative partnership with tourists to empower them to take small yet tangible steps towards environmental conservation. It involves diverse activities such as – clean-ups participation, recycling systems exploration, or plastic reduction pledges These initiatives help transform visitors into active stakeholders of environmental conservation.
Our team conducted an impromptu clean-up on one of our visits to the interiors of Odisha. We carried back the trash to ensure its rightful disposal.
10. Offset Your Carbon Footprint
When air travel is unavoidable, consider purchasing carbon offsets through reliable programs such as Gold Standard, Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), or Climate Neutral Now. These programs fund projects focused on renewable energy, reforestation, and other sustainable initiatives. By supporting these efforts, we can help reduce the carbon footprint of our travel and help implement sustainable tourism.
